Introduction
A.
Background of the Study
In the globalization age like now, many efforts do
for increasing the world unity. One of that efforts is to use
English as the international language. So, English is so much needed to be
able to have a communication with the international world.
If we are in the other country and want to speak with foreigner, we
need English to do that. Every country has different culture
and language. So, we need using English to speak with them because they just
know and can use English as the other language besides their language Indonesia.
Speaking English is a fair skill that must be owned
by everyone. Wherever else right now, English is used as the second obligation language
after Indonesia, for example in the university and corporation, we must use
English in interview test to be able to
join in that university or corporation.
The important of English as one kind of success modal, makes many
organization of English course comes around us. It can help us easy learning
English and better than learning by ourselves. Otherwise,
many cozy and effective learning method of English also comes. One of it is
using “Fun English” method in one of organization of English course in Pare -
Kediri. That is in BEC (Basic English Course), Pare - Kediri. By using
that method, student can have a cozy learning English. Because there, we can
study by playing game. Many games of education are presented. So, that can’t
make the condition of the class boring.
We choose this title because we are conscious
that English is very important for student’s world, especially for senior high
school students who are the bridge to the future. So, in order to be able to
have successfully in the future, we must start it from now. Make an English
lesson be cozy to study. Because, it can also
helps us.

Statement of The Problem
In
this thing, the writers take the statement of the problem about :

Because the

impossible to explain all of about it. So, the paper is limited at the
discussing of process of “Fun English” method used by one of organization of English course,
BEC, Pare – Kediri. The advantages can we get by studying English using “Fun English”.

concerning to the workings problem for able to understand the object that subjected

of method means as instrument to reaches the destination (Oemar Hamalik, Proses
Belajar Mengajar, 2001).
So, according of our opinion, method is an
effort that do in order to get success for everything that do.

of The Indonesian Big Dictionary, Fun is feel satisfied, relieved, not difficult, not
disappointed, stand, happy,
nothing that trouble, unless with
anything, etc. Or
like, easy, are easy, not
overlooked, practical, in

of The Indonesian Dictionary, fun or happy is a
situation or feeling so peace
(free from any problems).
So, according of our opinion, fun is
feeling that no sadness. We
just feel any happiness,
fell so peace and prosperous.

essentially is a meaningful process. Learning English is a learn process in
meaningful reality, where the student can directly to string up some word and

a. Story Telling
Story
telling is the conveying of events in word, images and sound, often by
improvisation or embellishment. Stories
or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment,
education, cultural preservation and in order to instill moral values. Crucial
elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters and narrative
point of view.
The earliest forms of story telling were thought to have been primarily
oral combined with gestures and expressions. In addition to being part of religion
ritual, rudimentary drawings scratched into the walls of caves may have been
forms of early storytelling for many of the ancient cultures. The Australian Aboriginal people painted
symbols from stories on cave walls as a means of helping the story teller remember the story. The story was then told using a
combination of oral narrative, music
rock art and dance, ephemeral media such as sand, leaves and the carved trunks
of living trees have also been used to record stories in pictures or with
writing.
b. Role Play
Role
playing (English: role – playing game RPG abbreviated) is a game that the
players play the role of imaginary characters and collaborate to weave a story together. The players chose action figures based on
the characteristics of their character,
and the success of their action depends on the system of game rules that have
been determined. Origin
still follow the rule set, the player
can improvise shape the direction and the final outcome of this game.
c. Art and Crafts
The
art and crafts movement was an international design movement that originated in
England and flourished between 1880 and 1910, continuing its influence up to
the 1930s. Instigated
by the artist and writings William Morris ( 1834-1896) in the 1860s and
inspired by the writings of John Ruskin
(1819-1900), it had its earliest and fullest development in the British Isles
but spread to Europe and North America as a reaction against the impoverished
state of the decorative arts and the condition under which they were produced.
The movement advocated truth to
materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often medieval,
romantic or folk styles of decoration. It
also proposed economic and social reform and has been seen as essentially
anti-industrial.

Show and tell is the process of showing
an audience something and telling them about it, predominantly in North America
and also popular in Australia. It is usually done in the a classroom as an
early elementary school technique for teaching young children the skills of
public speaking. Usually, a child will bring an item from home and will explain
to the class why they chose that particular item, where they got it, and other relevant
information.

Methods and techniques to be used should
be selected and adjusted to the ability to be achieved. Professionalism an
educator in the developing and utilizing methods and techniques are especially
needed for teaching and learning process can be run better.
Based on he writer’s observation, it
turns out music and movement is a very successful method when used in the
process of learning English especially for young children. Because virtually
music is the art preparing a sound or
sounds in sequence, combination, and temporal relationships to produce a
composition having unity and continuity (containing rhythm). And variety of tone and rhythmic sound
that is also called the song. So the music or song is a unity that can not be separated and can be used as a
tool in a learning process.

A.
History
of Basic English Course (BEC)
Have
you ever heard the term “English Village”? The village that located in Pare
Sub-District, Kediri District, East Java was very identical with a figure named
Muhammad Kalend Osen. How is their work? A signspot reads “English Village” was
installed at entrance alley of Anyelir Street, Singgahan Orchard, Palem
Village, Pare Sub-District. About 300 meters from intersection of the road,
there was an English course institute named Basic English Course (BEC).
The
course place that built by Muhammad Kalend Osen about 33 years ago was the
embryonic of appearance of the term “English Village” in that Orchard. During
the time, the term “English Village” was very popular in community. “English
Village” also has been famous through the various of this country, even in
other country.
Don’t
think that every people there communicated with English. The term “English
Village” appeared out from mouth to mouth. No one know when the appearance of
that term, and also who has named it. That term appeared because many English
course build in Pare
Sub-District, especially in Palem and Tulungrejo Village.
“Me
myself disagree with that term. That because of unclearly news. That’s lie”, said the man that familiar called Mr. Kalend when he was talking with “Seputar Indonesia” some times
ago. A father with three children also doesn’t forbid people to use that term
to imagine the proliferation of English course in that orchard. Some people,
especially student, even choose to
call that region as “English Village”. “Analysis of some people are different”,
said him. That term also appeares because
some of people houses are used to be boarding house. The occupant is
students who are studying English.
The
quantity are thousand
people from year to year. As an illustration, there are about 850 students who study in BEC at present. What else the students in other couse place. Atmosphere of that “English Village” is felt more because almost all of people
houses rent for boarding house and
each of they are using the name
that taken from name of foreigner. There were White House, Red House,
Philadelphia, Green House, Newcastle House, Vampire House, etc. Selection of
Kalend Osen as an exemplary educator figure until he got an award named People of The Year (POTY)
2009 from “Seputar Indonesia” wasn’t without a reason. Because of his
consistence during some years socializing English, proliferation of English
course institute in Pare region gives extraordinary
multiplier effect, isn’t separated from his carier.
From
economical side, in Singgahan
Orchard, at first the people only rely their life on farming in
the rice field, now be able to
get blessing from many similar
course institutes there. Start from BEC, finally appeared many course
institutes there.
Then, because of many boarding houses, small
shops, bookstores, and other bussiness as an effect of building BEC course institute. Indirectly, local people
around it felt any benefit from economical side.
“That give us so many
blessings. Help us so much”, said Wiyoto Asmo Jhon, Purwodadi’s people, Central
Java, an alumnus of BEC who finally lived in Singgahan Orchard by opening a
bookstore and sold any main daily life there. Same expression was expressed by
Yuniati, honey bee farmer who live near from BEC. “Many students who buy honey
in my shop”, said the woman who came from Yogyakarta. More of it, most of the
founding of English course institute in Pare region are alumnus of BEC,
although not all.
In fact, not a few others BEC graduates
from outside the region or outside the island who eventually founded the
institute similar courses in their respective regions after a brief education
at the BEC, which is generally taken for six months. Not only that, now with
the international standard school pilot program (RSBI) was initiated by the
government, quite a lot of teachers from various regions that take a short
course of one month at the BEC, the training system (TS). This is because RSBI
require students and teachers of English in the process of learning and
teaching. Thus the multiplier effect from the establishment of BEC which in 1976
pioneered Kalend Osen. Starting from Hamlet was born Singgahan thousands of
people from various places in Indonesia can
finally speak fluently
with English language.
Since it
started, the BEC has graduated
16,285 students.
The success of the man born Long
Journey Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan Province, February 20, 1945, with
BEC would not only come so
long. The
long effort traversed the father of three
children who had for decades years. The man with graying
hair is
originally never imagined he would be
able to reach success of this magnitude. "This has far exceeded my
expectations," he said. Kalend then tells the beginning of their work in
Pare, Kediri.
At that time, around 1976, Kalend came to the Singgahan of
hamlet for studying
to the KH Ahmad Yazid, a local religious figure
who managed mosque
and Pondok Darul Falah. In addition to extensive knowledge of their religion,
Kiai Yazid, said Kalend, also mastered nine foreign languages. Before he migrated to
Pare, Kalend had studied at the Pondok Pesantren Modern Darusssalam, Gontor,
Ponorogo, East Java.
There, Kalend studied few year. He only
received
education up to grade five at Kuliatul
Muallimin Al Islamiyah (second grade high school level). Kalend at that
age around 31 years old, was the
oldest student in his class. Before entering Gontor School in 1971, Kalend
already worked as a
teacher in his homeland, starting in 1966-1967. That profession was done only with the
certificate
of teacher education diploma religion (PGA),
though only up to grade four (equivalent to one high school class).
Profession as a teacher in Kalimantan did not make
him happy to draw knowledge. Until
at the age of 27 he chose to continue education in Java. "I want to live
the revolution," as determined Kalend when I first stepped when it left
the island of Borneo. On Darul
Falah Mosque Kalend
began their
work as language teachers even lived without deliberating. He then
told, at that time there were two students last semester
of IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya, who came to Pare to sit on the student of Yazid. The second student was about to
undergo the final exam in English campus to get a degree of diploma. But then
Kiai Yazid was out of area, whereas the final exam only five days away.
Finally Kiai Yazid's wife suggested the
two students were to learn English to Kalend. "Try to learn to Mr. Kalend.
He ever lived in
Gontor, he certainly could," said Kiai Kalend mimicked suggestions Yazid's
wife to the two
students. Kalend even brought him self to teach
the two students, although he had never lectured them.
Finnaly both learn English for five
days to discuss the 350 sums as the
reference for English exams.
With the lessons
from Kalend, the two students had graduated and held a scholar degree.
After that exam at
IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, both returned to the
Kalend course. The
success story of the two students were then spread out. Since
time many students who studied to the man
whose is table tennis. Kalend
finally established institution that is named BEC course, which at first was
also still on the porch was only a teenager around mosque.
Participants wese only teenagers from arround of the courses and they paid nothing. But they gave some money

B.
Learning Method in BEC
In learning English, many of the methods use to
facilitate the learning process. In BEC, some fun learning methods are
presented to facilitate students in learning English. English lesson itself is
divided into 5 subjects namely grammar, vocabulary, speaking, reading, and
listening, each of them is the
basic key to be able
to speak english well
1. Method
of Learning "Grammar"
Grammar is the basis of
theory or the basic capital in English. Grammar contains the formulas to be
able to compose sentences properly. Learning grammar with the grammar is very
important because we know how the actual English. However, the grammar is also
the hardest material in learning English. On the average,
students find it difficult because the formulas in the grammar are very
numerous and difficult to memorize.
In the grammar itself is also
divided into several basic formula. One of them is tenses, about 16.
Tenses is a basic formula to be able to compose sentences properly.
Given the importance of
grammar to speak English, many methods of learning appears. Especially, the methods
for learning tenses. To facilitate the students, the BEC is presented a method
that is very fun and very effective for us to memorize tenses. One method is to
use the song. And in 3 minutes, 16 tenses which we originally considered very
difficult to be memorized and understood, to be there in the palm of our hands.

included in the 4 groups of tenses in each rhyme. The four major groups are
present tense, past tense, future tense, and past future tense.

In addition to rote memorize the songs
like above, other methods are in use, like the
formula memorization by the holding of the ceremony every day in the morning at
the opening lesson. The formula that routine memorized every day is some
formula which is also incorporated in the grammar (except tenses). These
formulas are for example, part of speech which consists of the pronoun,
adjective, noun, conjunction, adverb, verb, interjection, and preposition.
2. Method of Leaning "Vocabulary"
Vocabulary is an English vocabulary or set of
words of English. Vocabulary is equally important as grammar. And the same is
with grammar, vocabulary is also considered difficult. That's because the
number of words which must be memorized. Many methods of fun to memorize vocabulary
in BEC. One method is to memorize vocabulary with vocabulary triangle game.
This game consists of 3 persons each student who has memorized the vocabulary
mentioned interchangeably and replicatly.
Another method to memorize vocabulary in the
BEC is to memorize vocabulary through pictures existing wall around the
neighborhood BEC. Through drawing, memorizing words originally considered
difficult to be lasier and more fun.
Besides the 2 methods above,
several other methods to facilitate memorizing vocabulary is:
a. Memorize
the words that exist within a group. For example bedroom, in which consists of
bed, pillow, Dutch, blanket, etc.
b. Do not memorize the word through the
dictionary because the words in the dictionary is sorted by alphabet and it
will be very difficult for us.
c. It is
easier to memorize the pictures because it involves our memory and imagination.
In
addition, other methods are as follows:
a. Matching the word
b. Fill in the blank
c. Transearch
d. Crossword
3. Method of Learning "Speaking"
Speaking is the most important foundation to be able to speak English. Speaking is the embodiment of all the theory and practice we got. Why should we master the grammar and vocabulary when we do not want to put it into practice? Everything will be in vain.
To be able to expedite our
speaking, capital is essentially a self-confident. Not grammar or vocabulary.
The important person we know what we mean. Because if we give more priority to
grammar or vocabulary, we will be afraid that what we will say it false or
true. So in the end will make us afraid to speak.
Some method to speak well
presented in BEC are:
a. The existence of a special area which
requires students to speak English
b. We will be punished when speaking Indonesian in the area of English language

c. Talking with friends using English and
mutually correct each other errors
In addition to the above 3 methods, another
method that is used to enhance the ability of speaking in BEC is by holding
weekly meetings program. The
program requires each student to make a speech in front of other friends. In
addition to speech, students are also required to display a simple role play.
The aim is to entertain the audiences in the midst of listening to speech. With
this program, would not want students to have a speech or play the role play
which both rely heavily on speaking. In addition to speaking fluency training,
meeting weekly program is also helpful to increase the confidence of each
student.
4. Method of Learning "Reading and Listening"
Reading and Listening is equally important as
the three basic materials to learn English on top.
a. Reading
Reading is reading a passage that uses the
English language. Reading is necessary because by reading we can train our
tongues to the pronunciation of English words. In addition, through reading we
can also find new words we've never found before.
In a reading lesson in the
BEC, students are required to read a few stories and memorize it. The stories
are divided into several levels of difficulty in grammar and vocabulary. The
first story is a story that must be memorized with a grammar that is simple and
easy to memorize. The next story gradually towards that grammar level which is more
difficult and so on up to the level of the most difficult.
Memorize the story in the BEC is found
to be difficult because the story is the fun story.
b. Listening
Listening here is listening to something
whether it's they are
English-language songs and conversation that
use English. Listening helps sensitivity of our ears to the words of the
English language. Also, by listening we can also match the pronunciation of English words us. In
addition to help the sensitivity to our, ear with the
words of the English language and train our pronunciation, listening also helps
us to discover lots of new vocabulary.
Listening methods used in the
BEC is for example students were told to listen to a song and given a paper containing
the text of the song. There are
some parts of the sentence with a blank. Student task is to fill the empty part
of the sentence through the songs heard.
This method is considered very effective and fun because in addition to learning, students also indirectly can memorize the song.

5. Outdoor Learning
Actually there is one major
problem that needs attention, the interest of students. Most of the students
are less interested in studying in the classroom, because teachers are still
using the lecture method, so that the material is being
taught verbally. Method
is applied
to a purely lecture does not
actively involve students in the learning process so that the learning process
becomes less attractive.
In the BEC, one of
the efforts to increase student interest in learning is to apply the method of
out door study, which is a method whereby the teacher invites students to learn
outside the classroom to see the events on the ground in order to familiarize
students with the environment. Through out door study method, outside the school
environment can be used as a source of learning. The teacher's role here is as
a motivator, it means the teacher as a guide for students to learn actively,
creatively and familiar with environment. Out
door study method on teaching as a means to cultivate creativity of independence
initiative, cooperation or mutual assistance and an increasing interest in the
subject matter. Thus the application of methods of Out door study is expected
to increase interest in student learning.
Method of out door study makes
students eager to
learn, concentrate more on the material, make the students think how to develop,
more comfortable learning environment, students can understand better for, the
subject matter, students are more daring telling the opinions
and make students more active.
The selection environment outside of school as
a learning resource would be adjusted with the lesson material. Through the
method of out door study, the shape of a given task tailored to students'
ability to limit the frequency that excites them fixed so as to avoid boredom
and burnout.
C. ADVANTAGES
method of "Fun Home" at BEC Pare-Kediri
1. Methods used in the BEC purposely arranged in a systematic
way, because with the way to make
students become bored and also assume that learning English was very pleasant
and not boring.
2. In the
BEC, it’s also
supported by an excellent environment to speak English so that students can
learn beyond the course. The students also felt comfortable
with the environment like that, because indirectly they can learn English with
the local community environment.
3. Assist students to interact.
The methods used in the BEC
can assist students learning to use interaction because
it’s very
creative and innovative. Such learning can improve student learning arousal
would be higher. Interact can also be done indoors or outdoors, either with
friends or with his advisor. By
interacting tutors will know the
weakness in the face of complaints by students, also students with students
interaction they feel not ashamed
to say their complaint to his
advisor.
4. Accelerate
mastery of the material
A student will
quickly master the material if the lesson explained is not monotonou.
Because it will make the student boring can not
receive the material maximally. By watching their friend students often joked with the theme and do not pay attention
to what is delivered by teachers. So that
the material would not be understood by the students.
